Useful Tips for secured trailer cabinets and other essentials for
Tow Trailing
Advertisment
As you would often ignore, there are many things that you must consider whenever towing a travel
trailer. Below are just some useful tips to make your trip safe and trouble free when travelling with a
trailer.
Checklist
When hooking up a trailer into a vehicle, try to accomplish things in the same chronological
order every time and try to create a checklist.
Tow Ratings
You can try to search for your vehicle’s tow ratings in your vehicle owner’s manual. It is very
important that you do not go beyond this standard weight. Exceeding the pre-rated trailer weight can
invariably cause certain handling difficulties, poor fuel mileage and insufficient power in tow
vehicles.
Weight Distribution
Try to load the tow trailer properly by storing all heavy items low and forward, and all the
lightweight materials high in trailer cabinets. This will sustain
the trailer’s center of gravity low and will avoid the occurrence of unnecessary, swinging, swaying, and
wobbling during the whole travel. Storing all essential items in the trailer cabinets ensure you that nothing
will be broken or damaged.
Secure all Loads
Be sure that every big and small thing in the trailer is put away in trailer cabinets and
whatever items not in the trailer cabinets are securely tied down so they won’t move. Inspecting the
fridge for any items that might spill or be thrown during the continuous travel is a good idea. It’s not a
fun way to commence your trip with a handful of spilled milk and broken eggs.
Hitch
Be sure that your trailer does not go beyond the recommended maximum tongue weight and towing
trailer capacity. Inspect the hitch for certain cracks and rust before hooking up the trailer into the
vehicle. The hitch will invariably have a 10% of the total weight of the trailer if the trailer is properly
loaded.
Ball
Again, check the label and ensure that you are not exceeding the total trailer weight capacity.
The trailer’s ball must be slightly greased with oil so that the trailer can travel smoothly. Also, it is
important that you check if the ball has certain rusts and cracks.
Safety Chains
The chains offer additional assurance that the trailer will not accidentally detach from the tow
vehicle. Attach the safety chains in a crisscross manner under the tongue of the trailer while allowing
adequate room for turning and a limited space for it not to be dragged on the ground.
Weight Distributing Bar
A Weight Distributing Bar is primarily used to transfer a portion of the tongue weight to the
tow vehicle’s front axle. However, finding the proper link point might seem difficult during the first few
attempts. If you fail to apply ample tension on the bars, you will most likely find yourself
swaying.
Connector
Connectors need to be checked regularly because they have the tendency to corrode easily. Make
sure that the wiring is loose enough to allow turns without disconnecting the ground. Once the connectors
have been hooked up, check the running lights, brake lights and turning lights to ensure that they are
properly working.
